Compact fluorescent (CFL) luminaires create a soft-edge lighting effect while also achieving energy savings compared to other traditional HID light sources. With higher lumens per watt and longer service life than incandescent light sources, CFL still does not match up to LED in either arena. Fluorescent technology also has a very tight ambient temperature range for optimal performance, making it a less popular choice for very cold environments. CFL provides "instant-on" capability with no additional time required for startup or restrike, however there is a warm up time before you have full output. Controls options include on/off control, monitoring and dimming capability in many cases.. CFL sources generally last from 6,000 to 15,000 hours.
